Abstract :

Traditionally prediction of induction motor performance is done using the conventional constant parameter model. The model assumes the saturation effect of the motor to be negligible, and is often inaccurate in predicting certain states of the motor especially, during large signal transient conditions such as direct on-line starting. The saturable magnetizing reactance model accounts for saturation effect in the mutual flux of the motor. Using the saturable model, the transient performance characteristics of the induction motor have been predicted and correlated with the results predicted by the conventional constant parameter model. The saturable magnetizing reactance model clearly demonstrates an improvement in terms of the induction motor performance over the conventional constant parameter model. This shows that detailed representation of saturation effects in induction motor modeling and simulation is important in induction motor analysis, particularly, when the motor is subjected to large–signal disturbances such as direct on-line starting.
