Abstract :

This paper presents an evaluation of wind energy potential of Sokoto in Northwestern Nigeria based on Weibull model using 10 years mean monthly wind speed covering the period of 1999 to 2008. The overall yearly mean wind speed in Sokoto was found to be 4.28 m/s. The Weibull distribution parameters (k and c) were calculated using the measured wind speed data. The average annual wind power density was found to be 48.1 W/m2 and is less than the threshold value of 100 W/m2 required for grid-connected installations. Hence the wind power availability in Sokoto can only be used for small stand alone wind power systems for powering street lights, homes, farms and businesses.
