Abstract :
This research probabilistically assesses the safety of simply supported hollow pot slabs designed in accordance with BS 8110 (1997). The concept of First Order Reliability Method (FORM) was adopted for the assessment of hollow-pot slabs of various spans based on the consideration of various live to dead load ratios. The results obtained show that the safety indices, decrease with increase in rib span and live-dead load ratios respectively. The safety indices range from -5 to 15, -15 to 15, -10 to 15; with corresponding averages of 3.33, 4.34 and 8.07 for bending, shear and deflection respectively. Based on the recommended safety index values of 3.3 – 4.4 for structures with moderate to large consequences of failure respectively, as reported in Ton and Michael (2000), BS 8110 (1997) design of simply supported hollow block slabs is conservative for rib spans less than 3 m and may be unsafe for rib spans more than 4 m. Designs for rib spans of 3 - 4 m, and for a live-dead load ratio of up to 0.6 is adequate and economical..
