Abstract :

The paper aims at determining the range of frequencies suitable for the operation of the powerline carrier (PLC) communications system. This relies on the use of data on the line parameters of the Shiroro complex 132kV singlecircuit powerline, which were collected from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) 330/132/33kV Transysco, Mando, Kaduna. Analysis of the data enabled the determination of the basic series impedance and shunt admittance matrices of the network. These matrices provide the parameter for electrically long lines at high frequencies. The performance of the PHCN powerline communications system within the determined range of frequencies was evaluated with attention focused on the high frequency parameters. Results show that carrier performance is enhanced between the frequencies of 10kHz and 500kHz. Research and development in the area of PLC communications should be supported with a view to improving the bandwidth and the reliability of communications as a whole.
