Abstract :

Structural design parameters of reinforced concrete strip footings designed in accordance with BS8110 (1997) with fixed column – footing connection was carried out using First Order Reliability Method (FORM). The variables relating to geometry, material and loading were considered random. The estimated safety indices are fairly consistent. It was however shown among other findings that the minimum reinforcement ratio of 0.2% recommended by the code of practice for this type of footing is only safe at higher effective depths, at lower effective depths, reinforcement ratios between 0.35% and 0.5% are safer. Also, the safety indices considering bottom reinforcements are higher than those for top reinforcements; this is because of redistribution of moment between the span to the column face on one hand, and the moment coefficient given by the code that seems conservative on the other.
