Abstract :

This paper presents a modified septic tank/soak-away system and its performance, for on-site treatment of sewage. A model of a modified system, including a filtration chamber was constructed with 5mm thick steel plates and using locally available filter materials. The model was used to treat cow sewage using various filter combinations; (no filter, charcoal-rice husk, charcoal-quarry chippings, charcoal-sharp sand, charcoal-sharp sand-quarry chippings) respectively. Samples of effluent were collected after treatment and tested for some physical and chemical parameters. The results showed that the modified septic tank/soak-away system significantly improved the quality of effluent, thus reducing the threat of contamination of ground water. Charcoal-sharp sand-quarry chipping filter combination had the best performance and it is expected that the system will have a similar performance on human sewage.
