Abstract :

This paper is on predicting the stability behaviour of three horse-power induction motor using eigenvalue method. Matlab program is developed for the study of the torque-slip characteristics of the machine at various slip ranges under steady-state condition. The stability study is carried out by developing Matlab program for the linearization of the machine’s electrical and mechanical models, and calculation of eigenvalues of the machine. Transfer function is developed from which the zeros, poles, and step response of change in electromagnetic torque divided by change in load torque at different operating slip are analyzed. The transfer function is also used to analyze the change in electromagnetic torque divided by change in stator voltage at different operating slip. The zero and pole plots are presented on the cartesian plane. The results show that the machine is stable at the two different cases presented at the operating slip of 0, 0.03, 0.1, 0.4 and 0.6, but is unstable at operating slip of 0.8 and 1.0. This study gives an idea of better operating regions of the induction machine for enhanced dynamic performance.
