Abstract :
The design modification of a rubber roller model of Acha de-husking machine was carried out with the view to reduce the drudgery involved in the traditional de-husking method that is considered laborious and time consuming, thus leading to low productivity, and to improve the performance parameters of the existing machine for better productivity. The aspects that were improved are the adjustable mechanism, feeding mechanism, belt tension mechanism and grain cleaning systems which were issues observed in the existing design. Relevant and standard engineering principles and theories were employed in the design and the fabrication was achieved through simple manufacturing and engineering techniques. Analysis of the preliminary test results of the modified machine as compared with the existing machine revealed that the machine’s performance indicators such as the throughput, percentage grain loss, percentage de-husking efficiency, percentage grain recovery and percentage cleaning efficiency were enhanced by 140 %, 75.6 %, 25.5 %, 9.5 % and 24 % respectively.
