Abstract :
Two manually operated and two animal drawn seed planter acquired by the International Institute for Crops Research in Semi-Arid Tropic (IICRISAT) were evaluated for their performances on different type of tillage system when sorghum is planted. Their performance was compared by conducting field and laboratory test as well as their economic benefit to the farmers. The laboratory investigation included seed drop per hill, seed spacing, seed damage, and depth of placement. The field test comprised of field efficiency, seedlings emergence, trend of emergence, plant spacing, plant height, plant per hill, and grain weight. The costs of owning and cost benefit of the planters were also determined. Planter 4 and 5 with efficiency of 69.05% and 72.89% respectively were found to be more efficient than planter 2 and 3 with efficiency of 59.77% and 58.96%, respectively.
