Abstract :

The siliconizing of Aluminium bronze was carried out to enhance the mechanical properties of the substrate and to determine the best temperature for the siliconizing treatment. The siliconizing treatment was carried out at temperatures of 800oC, 850oC, 900oC, and 950oC for 2 hours. The siliconized and the as-cast samples were then subjected to mechanical and metallograhic tests. It was found that the material responded favourably to the siliconizing treatment as indicated by the improved hardness, tensile strength and ductility after siliconizing. The best combination of properties was observed with the specimen siliconized at 900oC.
